Who we are

About Arbor Law

Arbor Law exists because we knew there had to be a better way to practise law. We built a model that keeps the standards, judgement and seriousness of top-tier private practice and in-house leadership, while creating a culture of trust, collaboration and genuine support in which lawyers can do their best work and clients receive the full benefit of it.

INTRO

What makes us different

For clients, Arbor Law means direct access to the judgement and technical ability of City-trained senior lawyers, many of whom have also served as Heads of Legal and General Counsel and know what it means to make decisions inside a business. That combination brings the best of both: legal excellence, commercial pragmatism and advice that is shaped by how decisions are actually made.

Our structure keeps that advice direct, practical and proportionate, without layers that slow things down or add unnecessary cost. Pricing is clear from the outset, and our lower-overhead model means clients generally receive senior legal support at a more cost-effective rate than they would in a traditional firm.

For lawyers, Arbor Law is a professional home for those who take their craft seriously and want to work with others who do the same. The people who join us are not stepping away from serious practice – far from it: they have earned their reputations and are trusted with the industry’s most serious work.

They are choosing Arbor as a true alternative to traditional private practice: a premium model in which the work remains demanding and high-calibre, but the structure around it is more transparent, more collaborative and better aligned with the way senior lawyers actually want to practise.

Our model rewards initiative, transparency and the building of trusted client relationships. Every lawyer keeps a materially higher share of their earnings compared to traditional firms, and the basis for remuneration is simple, visible and fair.

Contribution is recognised not only through originating and delivering work, but through collaboration too – including referring matters internally to the colleagues best placed to handle them. In that way, lawyers are encouraged to build both their own practice and the strength of the firm as a whole.

We are deliberate in building a culture rooted in respect – for our clients’ budgets, for our lawyers’ time, and for the different ways people think, work and live. That means no billable-hour targets, no expectation that commitment must be performed through presenteeism, and no return-to-office policy for its own sake.
Instead, we have created an environment that is flexible, adult and high-trust, where individuality is respected, standards remain high, and colleagues share knowledge, refer work with confidence and support one another without having to fit a single mould.

Beginnings

Our story

Arbor Law was founded by lawyers who first met years ago at Baker McKenzie, one of the world’s leading law firms, and who later went on to practise in top City firms and hold senior in-house legal roles. We built the firm we would have chosen on both sides of the table.

That experience taught us something important: the quality of legal advice depends not only on technical excellence, but on the structure, incentives and culture around it. Too often, traditional law firm models place layers, rigid economics and internal hierarchies between clients and the senior judgement they actually need.

We wanted to prove that there was a different, more sustainable model: one that kept the calibre and seriousness of a top City practice, but removed the bureaucracy, short-term pressures and burnout culture that too often define the industry.

Just as importantly, it had to produce advice that was:

  • clear,
  • commercial,
  • given by someone prepared to stand behind it, and
  • respectful of the time and judgement of the person relying on it.

And so we built the kind of law firm we ourselves would want to work in and instruct — one that serves its clients as well as its lawyers, and one we could be proud of.

At Arbor Law, there is no hierarchy or pecking order: every lawyer here is a senior, City-trained specialist, chosen for the quality of their judgement, the standard of their work and the way they collaborate with others. Clients deal directly with experienced professionals and receive clear, actionable advice from people who understand the commercial consequences just as well as the legal context.

Our lawyers join Arbor because they want to continue practising at a high level in an environment that is collegiate, rigorous and free from unnecessary internal theatre. They work alongside trusted colleagues, refer matters with confidence, and benefit from a structure that gives them autonomy without leaving them to operate alone.

Senior specialists and trusted advisers

Every Arbor Law lawyer is a senior specialist with significant experience in top City firms, leading boutiques, and in-house legal teams within major corporations. Most have served as Head of Legal and General Counsel or as trusted advisers to boards and founders.

This means that when you instruct Arbor Law, you are dealing with people who understand not only the letter of the law, but also the pressures and demands of running a business – we know that legal advice rarely ends with analysis; it feeds a decision that someone else has to take, defend, and live with.

Our operating model is lean and precise. We keep our overheads modest, our processes streamlined, and our teams focused on what matters most: the substance of the work. This allows us to be flexible in how we charge clients, while preserving the continuity and perspective that comes from working directly with senior professionals. It also gives our lawyers the freedom to shape their practices within a clear, values-based framework.

What matters

Our values

What sets Arbor Law apart from a traditional legal practice

Clarity

We communicate, price and advise with precision. Clients always know where they stand, and colleagues understand how and why decisions are made.

Empowerment

We create the conditions for lawyers to practise on their own terms, and for clients to access expertise that materially improves their outcomes.

Respect

Budgets, time, and different ways of thinking are valued. We are inclusive in our approach to colleagues and clients alike, with particular attention to neurodivergent perspectives and sustainable working practices.

Practicality

Advice is grounded in commercial context, not theory. We focus on solutions, next steps, and the real risks at hand.

Excellence

Arbor Law is home to senior, City-grade specialists who care about the quality and impact of their work. Many of us have held Head of Legal and General Counsel roles; we deliver the standard we once sought ourselves.

Collaboration

We share knowledge, refer work, and support one another without ego. Success is measured not just by individual outcomes, but by the strength of our collective effort.

The difference
Big law without the baggage

Arbor was not built as a protest against traditional private practice, but from experience of what matters most to clients and to senior lawyers: experienced judgement, high standards and advice delivered without unnecessary complication.

If you are considering Arbor Law – as a client seeking senior expertise or as a lawyer looking for a more rewarding way to practise – you will find the same quality, seriousness and excellence associated with the top traditional firms, combined with a model built around clarity, fairness and the genuine partnership of equals. That, for us, is the measure of a better law firm.

Arbor Law. Better for clients. Better for lawyers.
